Home decorating ideas from home concepts magazine. It talks about the difference between handwaven rugs and carpets. In this article Mr Amin Begheri from ‘The orientalist Singapore” talk about rug and carpet from his personal view.
I would like to share this articles ;-
What’s the difference between handwaven rugs and carpets?
Rug are smaller, more casual and are carried around by nomadic tribes. They are not larger than 7 by 5 feet ; anything bigger and it’ll be called carpet.
What are the different carpets available?
Carpets are group into 2 general categories: classical and contemporary. Within the classical. carpets are classified according to new, antique, place of orgin ( techniques) and materials employed. Quality carpets use finer materials such as silk to weave into small knots, and are therefore more detailed and expensive. Their average knots per square inch is 400, the highest is 1000. The finest regions for classical carpets are found in northwest Tabriz (Iran) and Kashan ( Central Iran)
Contemporary carpets are evaluated by their design, the number of colours employed and their designer. Its value depends very much on the creativity of the designer and density of the carpet. The finer carpets have a more detailed knotting between 300 to 500 per square inch and are more dearly priced. Haynes Robinson, Jan Kath and Mischioff are all big designer names in the world of contemporary carpets.
In humid climate such as Singapore, is wool really a suitable material for carpets?
Wool comes in various grades. Choose carpets that use the finest wool such as kark, which is soft fine wool from the belly of the sheep age between 8 to 14 months. It’s more cooling and soft and there will be no ‘poky’ feeling when the skin rubs against this grade of wool.
