8 Steps to a New and Better Kitchen setup

A lack of clutter is the key to building an optimally functional kitchen, and if you’re remodeling or redecorating yours, aiming for a balance between beauty and ease of use is vital to your success. Give yourself a head start by keeping these simple tips in mind:

  1. Lighting is all-important. Leave some space around your countertops for small lamps, which you can use to create a warm and homey mood after dark. To cut down on your energy costs, you might also install a skylight – these are very popular in kitchens, as they give the entire room a light, breezy and airy feel.
  2. Keep the top of your refrigerator as clear and clean as possible. Many homeowners use this space to store unessential items that don’t need to be there; at most, keep a small selection of cookbooks there, but nothing else. It will help create a sense of free-flowing space in the room.
  3. Place heavily used appliances on your countertops, but keep things you don’t need all the time stored in an out-of-the-way place. Coffee makers and toaster ovens don’t take up a whole lot of room, but you generally won’t need to clutter your counter space with food processors or baking utensils.
  4. Group items you do keep on your countertops by function. This will prevent you from having to root around all over the room to gather the things you need to whip up breakfast or bake a cake.
  5. Keep your fine glassware on display in a special cabinet or case that’s integrated into the room’s other design elements. This will lend a touch of elegance to your kitchen while protecting your quality glasses from damage.
  6. Add some racks, to both your walls and the space inside your cabinetry. A spice rack conveniently placed beside the stove will make cooking easier and more efficient, and pot racks built into your cabinets will make keeping everything organized a snap.
  7. Shift your accessories each season. For example, spruce up your room by choosing light-colored dish towels and aprons during warm weather and darker ones during the fall and winter. You can also add a touch of flair by using specially themed dish towels around Halloween and Christmas.
  8. Don’t underestimate the power of plants to make a big difference in the way your kitchen looks and feels. Every room in your home can benefit from being greener, and plants are one of the least expensive ways to add a little life to your kitchen.
